Biking: The NYC Century Tour Wrap Up

I can hardly can believe it's over...

I left the apartment at 6:30am. This is how I looked before leaving -

At home, 6am, before leaving for the bike tour

The weather was beautiful, perfect even, and the sun had just come up. I rode over the Pulaski Bridge -

Riding over the Pulaski Bridge @ 645am

to the 59th Street Bridge-

Riding over the Queensboro Bridge for the first time today

and then had to ride north all the way up to the 110th Street entrance of Central Park. By the time I got there, I had already clocked 7 miles. Shortly after arriving, my friends spotted me - Joe Katz, Erin, and JJ -

Joe Katz, Erin & JJ at the start in Central Park

Joe Katz took an artsy-angled photo of me -

At the start, in Central Park

We rode through Manhattan - pretty much everywhere I had been last weekend! Riverside Drive, 11th Ave, Broadway, Bleecker St. I couldn't believe it was almost the exact path I had mapped out for myself. I can't tell you how many comments I got about my shoes, outfit and bike. And as usual, people were taking pictures of me (though most of them asked first, which was a nice change from the usual sneaky photographs).

We made our way to the southern tip of Manhattan, taking the Brooklyn Bridge over to Brooklyn

We rode through a beautiful section of Brooklyn -

and into Prospect Park (another place I was last weekend!).

We rode along the water for a while. This was one of my favorite parts of the whole day (not sure what section of Brooklyn this is) -

That bike path/greenway had a stunning view of the Verrazano Bridge -

Verranzano Bridge

Riding along that path, there was the sound of seagulls and the familiar smell of salt water, which I really enjoyed. And once I noticed this handsome bird, I couldn't resist stopping to photograph him -

What a gorgeous bird!

We stayed on Surf Ave, past Coney Island (again, where I was just two weeks ago). I only stopped for a minute to eat a vegan sandwich I had packed. But many cyclists lined up for some Nathan's -

Cyclists love Nathan's

Riding past a bunch of docked boats, I thought "I should photograph a boat" and just as I looked up, I saw one that was named after me! (sort of) What a coincidence!

This boat is named after me... almost

I love this sign so much!

Fantastic signage!

Around 11am, I stopped for the first time all day - the first time - since 7am! I had to use the bathroom, so I had no choice. Fortunately, I also got some free and healthy snacks at that rest stop. I also asked the mechanic to look at my bike because it was stopping really abruptly all day and just felt very tight - hard to pedal and even harder to stop. They couldn't find a problem and told me to carry on...

From there I rode through some very desolate, remote and unattractive sections of Brooklyn - places I had never been and will likely never be again. Places, dare I say, that were not worth photographing.

It was certainly a diverse ride through the Borough of Kings. But I swear, whomever mapped out this route made sure to find EVERY possible hill in Brooklyn. I couldn't even believe some of the steep hills we had to climb! But I climbed every last one of them.

Then we rode on Eastern Parkway (I know I sound like a broken record, but I rode there last weekend too!) which is a beautiful, tree lined bike/pedestrian path -

Eastern Parkway

From there, we headed through Williamsburg and Greenpoint - a route I am *very* familiar with, literally passing the block I live on. I could have left the tour at that moment, but I did not.

I crossed the Pulaski Bridge again -

Me, on the Pulaski Bridge (for the 2nd time today)

and headed back to Queens, to the 59th St Bridge (does this sound familiar? It should, it's the same way I started the tour this morning!)

Riding ovr the Queensboro Bridge for the 2nd time today

and made my way back to the 110th St entrance of Central Park, shortly before 2pm, where they had a great cheering team of young ladies! Thank you, gals! You also did a great job!

I did it!

I was told by many people throughout the day that I win the award for "most stylish", but they all admitted there was no actual award. That's ok, the verbal award was enough for me. And I heard from the marshals that they had *never* seen anyone do this tour in heels. I was proud to be the first!

I collected my goody bag, with t-shirt -

I collected my goody bag and t-shirt at the finish

I met a nice young woman from Transportation Alternatives, who thanked me for promoting the tour (she saw me on Brokelyn) -

Me & Dora (?) from Transportation Alternatives

And like that, it was over. I had done it. But I still had to bike home.

I headed south on 5th Ave and over the Queensboro Bridge (yes, this IS the third time I crossed this bridge today) -

Queensboro Bridge

and over the Pulaski Bridge for the 3rd time too (but I was too exhausted to pull over and take a photo). I continued into Greenpoint, along Manhattan Ave, and decided to give into my insatiable desire for beer. A celebratory beer. Where else but at Habitat - because I love their waffle fries!

Celebratory beer and waffle fries at Habitat

I think that might have been the BEST beer I ever had in my life.

Unfortunately, after leaving there, I took my bike straight to B's Bikes because it had been acting weird. They were kind enough to congratulate me on today's ride (and I initiated high fives to many of the staff). I explained the situation to Andre, who I adore, and left her there for the night in their very capable hands.

I removed my odometer before dropping her off and the final reading for the day was 70.7 miles!

70.7 miles

Exhausted, I walked back home, where I took an 'after' picture. Look at how frizzy my pigtails are -

At home, after the bike tour

and modeled my new t-shirt!

Showing off my NYC Century Tour t-shirt

I almost can't believe it's over, and that I did it as fast as I did. Of course it helped that the weather cooperated and there were a lot less people than the 5 Boro. It was a great ride and great day. Maybe I'll attempt the 75 mile next year. But I should probably get a 'real' bike. I am thinking this might be my dream bike.

Heck, if I saved for an iPod, I can save for this, right?

You are amazing!
What an excellent way to spend a day. I am always astounded to see how cute you dress to go biking. I must learn how to bike in kitten heels!

I love that you can wear HEELS to bike! You are Glam all the way!!! Where's the fishnets???

*Bitch Cakes* said...

I wore fishnets too! You can see them in my before and after shots in front of the mirror. If you mean my fishnet sunburn - I didn't get one this time :)

Congrats!!!!! You're my cycling hero. PS...you'll looooove the Bianchi. My husband has several, and has no regrets for the money spent. :)

Congratulations!!! What a wonderful accomplishment!

Heather said...

Marisa, I was gonna say something about the heels! lol You were reading my mind. Think how much happier and sexier we'd all feel if we rode bikes while wearing heels and fishnets. And a bra that pushes up instead of smashing down. lol

I love that you did the ride in an adorable outfit! Now you have me wanting to run my marathon in a dress and fishnets (I'd think I could run 26 miles in heels!)Hmm, maybe I'll wear fishnets under my running shorts. Congratulations on your big ride!!

So, I can't tell a difference in the way you look in the before and after... The fact that you always go biking in cute outfits has me thinking that maybe I could ride a bike to places without completely recking my appearance. Oh, and cute picture modeling the new t-shirt.

Coming out of lurking to say how much I admire you...70 miles in heels and fishnets?? You kick so much ass and look FABULOUS doing it! And you've inspired me to dust off my bike and hit the road, so I definitely thank you for that!!

Great photos! Your blog makes me want to buy a bicycle and ride around... Plano? Not as cool of a backdrop as NYC but whatever. I would probably do it in heels too ;-) I own 50 pairs of heels and NO athletic shoes.

LOVE that shot of you on the Pulaski. Congrats on your super ride.

Meirav said...

When you get the new bike can you spraypaint it pink?

*Bitch Cakes* said...

Meirav- it's a muted pink, which is close enough. But to tell you the truth, I love the men's turquoise color.

Love it! I was on the fence about doing this ride and ultimately didn't because I'm so broke lately and couldn't justify PAYING to ride the same routes I take on any given weekend for free. Maybe next year I'll be up for the full century. Anyway, congrats, and rock on in your kitten heels!

What a great pictorial of your day. I am a newbie to your blog and I have to say I totally LOVE your dress sense. I mean who says you have to wear ugly trainers and bike shorts for an epic bike ride?! You rock.

PS - you looked just as good in the after shots...

Amazing how different people's weekends can be!! Please drop by my site and see my pics of this weekend - in Africa! Ghana to be specific...

All the best

As always, am drawing tremendous inspiration from your blog. You are the coolest girl ever! I love your biking outfit!!

All these pictures made me miss my old biking days, so I took mine into the shop this weekend to get it in good working order. I can't wait to take it out for its first run in probably two years! Nashville does have some great parks going for it, but my biking trail won't be anywhere as cool as yours!

I did the 55-mile route yesterday too, I saw you at the rest stop and thought "really? heels and a skirt?!?" Amazing. You and the guy with billboard behind his bike must have had the hardest ride. Is your butt as sore as mine today?

Heather said...

Congratulations on a great ride. I really enjoy your pictorial tours of New York. And I love the way you ride your bike all dolled up in girly clothes and red lipstick.

You are so fabulous!! And your shoes you rode in...you go girl!!What beautiful pictures, makes me really want to come to NY now!! Congrats!!

Thanks for the free tour through NYC! I love looking at your pictures. It is on my "bucket list" to visit there sometime. Your blog is a cheaper way to see the sites than traveling from my home in Wisconsin! Good Job on the ride! I agree that you were the most stylish! I did my first 5K this weekend. It feels awesome to tackle those goals you thought you never could!

Holy damn woman! Could you be any damn cuter? No, not possible.

I'm so proud of you, and you are such an inspiration. When I struggle with whether to ride my bike to work or not, I think about you and a few other ladies that I read about doing these long rides, and I get in my workout gear and RIDE!

Off topic, I saw these links and thought of you: http://luckytikishop.com/ and http://luckyloushoes.com/.

Truly awesome achievement!
I adore cruisers - I have two, a Schwinn and most recently Paul Frank nirve. I find my nirve a really solid bike, it weighs a ton! I could never look that stylish pushing up a hill... heels or no heels!
;-)

Bella said...

Absolutely amazing! You must have felt such a sense of accomplishment to finish that entire then, and then some! And in heels, no less!!

PK said...

First of all, you look so amazing. I really would love to see a photo of you actually riding...you do a great job of taking pictures of other people...:-)

So inspirational...and so European. They bike in all kinds of gear, but never so stylish as you!!!

A-dor-a-ble.

Hey Bitch Cakes, I need to ask you a massive favour. Myself and my partner Robert have entered a competition to win a trip to Thailand to help them with their tourism growth. We had to submit a 1 minute video about ourselves. Our video has been viewed around 600 times but some people who have not been on for as long have had around 10000 hits, i see cheating is obviously on their agendas, the first stage is supposed to be based on what the judges think of you but i suspect it has to do with how many views you get. So i am asking you since you have a large followers base if you would be willing to write a wee blog to your followers and ask them to follow the link at the bottom and view the video of myself and Robert, feel free to view it as many times as you want as it increases the viewage, i have noticed you only need to watch the first couple of seconds and then you change page and go back and woola another 1 view :) Cheating? maybe, but it seems thats what everyone else is doing. I know that your friends and families don't know me and Robert but it would be totally appreciated.

Dude!! You biked 70 MILES in hose and heels??? You are either a hero or a whacko. Maybe both!! Congrats to you for completing the tour. I think it's awesome!

Just came across this blog. I did the ride, too. (Well, most of it - at mile 102, just after the last bridge from the Bronx I got a flat and, after twelve hours in the saddle I was MUCH too exhausted to fix it and do the last mile or two.) It was my first century and for me, the first thirty miles were a blast, the second thirty I thought I was going to die, and the last forty were hard but I got through them. When I was done I couldn't imagine doing it ever again but now I can hardly wait until next year - when I'm determined to do it faster!

In the days that followed I thought I was pretty cool and I let everyone know it. But I didn't do it in heels and fishnets on a big pink cruiser and I sure didn't look NEARLY as cute as you. So go you! Hopefully we'll see you next year!

(BTW - I totally agree with you about B's. I bought my Fuji from Brendan back in April and it's the best money I've spent in like forever. That Bianchi is style, yes, but you could do worse than the Fuji. I've been in there a bunch of times since for this and that and everyone there is way cool. Brendan shook my hand when I told him about doing the century.)
