Sadly, I did not make my meeting tonight because I am home sick. (I am going to see if I can make it to another meeting later in the week, so hopefully I can do a weekly meeting recap blog.) I can't remember the last time I was this sick. I feel so terrible that I haven't even left my apartment for about 36 hours now. Since I've been trapped at home, I've only had the energy to sleep, eat and watch TV, so I am caught up on my DVR stuff and watched The Biggest Loser tonight. And I'm inspired to talk about Jillian.
In every past season, I disliked her. I always thought she was just a bitch and wondered "Why is she so mean to everyone?!" But I see her in a very different light this season. And I do not think it's because she changed; I think it's because I changed. Now I see what she's doing and what her intentions are - she gets into their heads to help them uncover the deeper seeded issues of what got them to the condition they were in when they appeared on the ranch. She talks to them in a way that pushes them further and makes them realize that THEY are holding themselves back, that THEY need to change their thinking, that THEY need to do this for them.
I love watching those break through moments!
She summed up that process perfectly tonight when she spoke directly to the camera:
"What I'm trying to do is create an unfortunate situation that pushes them out of their comfort zone, that makes them uncomfortable, that triggers all their issues so they learn how to manage it in a safe, controlled environment where I can create a positive outcome because when it happens in the real world, they'll know what to do instead of folding."She continued to try to get through to Amanda while she was on the treadmill, telling her:
"Why are you so attached to being a failure? Why don't you change your mind today... You want to fail. You don't want to succeed... What are you getting out of it?... You are not failing here, you quit. There is a difference between quitting and failing... It's going to require some courage, it's going to require a little bit of bravery. It doesn't mean you're going to be fearless... Step on the treadmill and make it count... You make it happen. You don't wait for life to happen. You make it happen."Amanda did quit the treadmill and left the gym, crying, after all of that. I really wanted to see the lightbulb go off in her head and see her get back on the treadmill but she wasn't ready for it.
Then later in the episode, Jillian said to Amanda:
"You have to redefine your view of failure. It's not failure, it's a learning process. You gotta fall down a few times you gotta make a few mistakes in order to learn. It's how you grow. Think about it."Bravo! I could not agree more!
But Jillian is not always a bitch to them, she knows when to be compassionate - she shifted gears and talked Shay through her own breakthrough about what made her morbidly obese, and the root of her issue - her heroin addicted mother who didn't love her. It was emotional and powerful and in the long run, I think it helped Shay. She also talked to Abby very gently about her personal tragedy of losing her husband and children. So she's not a bitch like I thought, she knows what she's doing.
It was tonight I realized that it's official: I am a fan of Jillian and her tough love approach. I often hear her in my head when I'm doing something at the gym. Although I've never met her or trained with her, her voice and words motivate me when I need them. Thank you, Jillian.
Speaking of The Biggest Loser, I saw during one of the commercial breaks that there is a BL game for the Wii Fit. I had been considering buying this for a while but now I'm even more excited about the idea. So it's feedback time - Do any of you have the Wii Fit? Love it/hate it/want to share your opinions? Let me know. More than likely, I will get it regardless but I'd love to hear what you have to say.
Thank you and have a great week!

I agree 100%. Tonights episode was great, and I took alot from the statements that you quoted.
Wow, I have never even watched this show, but now I think I have to. I am desperate for inspiration at this point in my diet journey (Day 18).
Sigh.
All I have to say is that Abby far outweighs either Jill or Bob on the inspiration level. I swear every episode when she talked I was crying.
Abby is seriously amazing. She is a true hero in my opinion.
Betcha anything that next week its time to spotlight the Blue team and what their issues are and what they need to work through.
I am really enjoying this season. Well with the exception of Tracy but that is a given.
I also love Liz to pieces but that is a combination of her and I sharing a name and her Southern accent. Woman is a spitfire!
Plus...she's totally HAWT! ;)
Good post. You definitely have to be ready to hear the hard stuff and really make a change and with each person the trigger is very different.
Regarding Wii Fit - I am in the process of saving to buy all the components because I am a huge fan. My parents have it and I use it every time I go visit them. There are so many different ways to sweat! Bowling with my mom using Wii has been one of the most hilarious experiences of my life. Fun while sweating is a good thing.
Never seen Biggest Loser, don't intend to :D
However, I do have a Wii Fit, and the Wii Fit (Plus)... I also have several non-fit games for the Wii that are still semi-active.
They don't burn tons of calories; or at least, the activities that do (free-step and free-run) are the ones you could do on your own without a wii.
But a lot of the activities are fun, they get you up and moving when you'd rather sit on the sofa, and they help increase flexibility.
If you're a really hard-core gym bunny, I wouldn't get one JUST to work out. The fit (plus) does fix some of the problems in the original wii - such as the time between activities. You used to do a stretch or a plank or whatever and then have to tab for 30-45 seconds through the menu to get to your next exercise (so in essence, you would "wiirkout" for an hour to get 37 minutes of actual calorie burning in. Now you can set up a custom routine and just do that. (Except that the custom routines don't let you do cardio in the middle, just strength training and aerobics. grumble)
I wish you could come over and Wii Fit with me to see if you like it! It's so much fun.
I was very much against buying video games of any sort, but it has been a good thing for the whole family (that includes this 37 year old mama). I loooooe hula hooping. It's a fabulous ab and hip workout, not to menion, I'm the only one in our family who can win that game so I'm the hula hoop queen. Who wouldn't love that????
We live in Ohio, and it tends to stay pretty cold and icy here during winter months. The Wii Fit kept us all moving in the evenings last winter when I know we would have just sat on our asses watching TV instead. It's worth it in my book. :)
Santa is bringing us the Wii Fit PLUS, and also the Biggest Loser game for the system.
Lastnight's episode made me ball my eyes out, wahhh. But it was great, wasnt it. What an inspiration!
The Wii Fit is fun but in my opinion, it doesn't give you much of a workout. I don't think I've ever broken a sweat on it. I have not gotten the new version. That one is suppose to be better. If you were going to purchase a bundle, get the newst version.
Dance Dance Revolution is fun for the Wii. You can work up a sweat doing that. And I've heard really good things about EA Active for the Wii. That is suppose to be a better workout too.
I have the Wii fit and Wii active and love them both! Wii Active is more of a full body workout, but utilizes the Wii fit balance board if you have it
I know how you feel as I felt the same way about Jillian at first too. I had an "aha!" moment watching the show and realized the same about her :-)
Sorry you're sick, this rain sucks.
Love your blog, love your style, love the Richardson! [I've got friends at Graham and Withers]. Thanks for great reading, keep up the fantastic work!
I used to like Jillian, until she started hawking weight loss pills--any respect I had for the woman is now gone.
Feel better soon!
H =)
:) feel better soon! I actually don't watch the biggest loser.
I originally bought a Wii simply for Rock Band, which my friends and I have had so much fun on. Then I decided to get the Wii Fit and it is the best money I have ever spent. I read a lot of reviews and even followed the blog of a girl who lost 90lbs on the Wii Fit and decided to go for it despite a lot of people saying it was not a good workout.
I am glad I did.
Since getting it, I have lost 30lbs, doing nothing else but the Wii Fit.
For me, a girl who was a couch potato before it has been perfect. I started with 30 minutes a day, 7 days a week and it got me motivated. I do the hula hoop (great for hips and thighs) the running and the Free Step. Combined I now do 45 minutes a day and it goes by super fast. I love my Wii Fit and I am always disappointed when others don't love theirs as much.
For you I don’t know. You are already very active so you may not get the workout you do in other places, but I think the Wii makes it fun. And for those who said they don’t sweat on the Wii, I cannot even imagine that. I sweat and even my bf who is runner and extremely fit sweats.
So that’s my two cents!
I have had the Wii Fit Board for a while. The original Wii Fit game was just "meh" to me, but fun to do when I'm working three 12-hour night shifts in a row. This way I can at least be a little active when I wake up in the afternoons without having to leave the house.
More recently (this past summer) I bought the EA Active game, which I feel is a better workout. You can use the Wii Fit Board or not with this game, and I personally think some of the exercises are harder WITHOUT the board on that game.
The Jillian Michaels game for the Wii SUCKS. I'm not sure about the new Biggest Loser game, but I'll anxiously await your review of it!
Just got the Gold's Gym game for the Wii which is all boxing. My arms were sore just from the training videos.
Bottom line- it's not a killer workout, but a great time killer that happens to burn calories. I love using it when I'm pressed for time or can't leave the house for whatever reason.
Not too much to add to what everyone else has already said but I'll try anyway! :P lol
Do you already have a Wii? Definitely get Wii fit Plus over the original Wii Fit. You get the same stuff that's in the original and they fixed a couple of things for the new version. That being said, I use this to keep track of my weight and BMI and to warm up. Not really for an entire workout (although I'm inspired by Lisa's comment, wow that's awesome!)
I have not tried Jillian's game (yet) but haven't heard good things about it. I like using Wii Fit plus as a warm up/weigh-in and then EA Sports Active for a workout. I'm hoping to try out Jillian's game and the Biggest Loser game for myself soon!
I hope you feel better soon!!
I'm watching the first season of the BL Australia, so I'm unfamiliar with Jill, but as I watch it I see that she is a deeply caring person. She's also a bitch too, but you need that hardness, that solid wall who's there to support you when you need it most. She's amazing. I wonder if she truly fathoms the amount of inspiration and hope and help that she's given through her work with BL.
My mother and sister each have Wii fits and love it. I've tried theirs out and don't get much out of it, but I guess its ok for a rainy day. I've read articles on how effective it can be for workouts, but so far I'm not convinced.
I stumbled upon your blog from Sassy Chica's blogroll, and I'm so glad I did. First off, can I just say that you look FABULOUS! Way to GO for making such positive change in your life. So...on to Biggest Loser. I couldn't agree with you more about Jillian. I mean, at first, she seems so rough and mean, but I love it when she gets in their heads and gets to the REAL issues of how they ended up the way they are. It's like she's trying to help them make a permanent change and that she really cares. I think they need her tough attitude, too, though.
I love Jillian -- if you get a chance or would be interested, you should check out podcasts of her radio show she did. It was then that I really started liking her - the issues she talked about and how she got down to the emotional issues, especially. The mp3s can be downloaded here: http://www.kfiam640.com/pages/jillian.html
I don't have a Wii Fit, but I do have the Wii Active (it was cheaper and appeared to be more cardio based, which is what I wanted) and I *love* it. It makes working out so fun. Enjoy!
IM COMING TO WILLIAMSBURG NEXT WEEKED! let's meet up!!!!!!! I miss you!
Also, Soooooo glad you are on the Jillian bandwagon now!!!! I LOVE her! I have been doing her workout too! I know you like new diet/weightloss books. She has two of them: this one (http://tinyurl.com/ykmcolx) I bought a year ago and read it completely....I love her workouts in the back! They kick my ass! The second one (http://tinyurl.com/yldy8m2) is intended for those people that only have a little bit more to lose and get toned. Hope all is well! BTW...you look STUNNING!! Hopefully I'll see you soon!
I had a Wii and to be honest, I got pretty bored with it after a short period of time. If I had kids it would be different, but...of course, now that the Biggest Loser game is coming out I kind of wish I hadn't sold my Wii, ha ha! I personally prefer walking and biking outside, and also my workout DVDs (the Leslie Sansone walk ones being my current favorite).
I watched the episode too and was equally impressed. She's not there to make people feel cozy about working out. She's there to push them to their limit. And I respect her approach. Not for everyone, but she forces people to think about what they are doing and WHY!
I have never watched this show but I caught a few moments of it recently and I only saw the few minutes that you described in your blog. Very ironic, don't you think. I love your blog. It is totally fun and interesting and I especially love your amazing red lips!
You are such an inspiration. Keep up the story telling. You have a gift.
Warmest Regards,
Denise Burks
